Challenging Norms to Advance Diversity and Equity in Addiction Science
Advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion is central to every IAS activity. Addiction affects all communities, but some bear a heavier burden due to longstanding structural inequities. Traditional academic practices have perpetuated these disparities, with the addiction science workforce lacking diversity because research universities often recruit from a narrow circle of elite institutions. This approach upholds the status quo and disconnects scholars from real-world contexts, allowing experienced academics with privilege to distance themselves from newcomers and the communities they study.
